Deterministic Chaos: Double Pendulum

A single pendulum is a system of order. This is why it can be used as a timekeeper in clocks. Similar causes always produce similar effects.
An undamped double pendulum also exhibits periodic motion when its oscillations are sufficiently small. Although the physical laws remain valid, the system’s parameters can be adjusted to induce chaotic motion.

Experiments with the Double Pendulum Simulation (restart each time)

Find the parameters for periodic and chaotic systems:

  1. Adjust the lengths and masses so that the motion resembles that of a single pendulum.
  2. Vary the starting angles (synchronously and asynchronously).
  3. Vary the masses (synchronously and asynchronously).
  4. Vary the lengths (possibly also the masses).
  5. Change the planet (gravity 1g for Earth).
